Ear Training 101: How To Identify Chords By Ear (Part 1)

(Watch Part 2 here)

To make your own classical or fingerstyle guitar arrangements, you need to be able to identify notes and chords by ear.But so few people develop that very necessary skill! Why is it so hard for us to pick things out by ear?

Other than the obvious reasons (practice ear training!), it’s because we often don’t even know what we’re listening for. We’re blindly trying to pick out notes from a mix without any strategy or understanding behind how those notes fit together to form chords.

This week, I’m kicking off a video series called Ear Training 101. In today’s video, I show you a method I use to identify chords by ear. I’m able to figure out an entire chord after identifying only one single note.

Many of you have told me that you struggle with or are intimidated by ear training. Let me make it simple for you! You don’t have to learn everything or train your ear for hours a day to get the hang of this. After watching this video, I think you’ll realize that picking out chords by ear isn’t as hard as you thought.
